2015 Family Picnic - 2007 Revisited

Who can forget the Moore Family Reunion at the Tenderfoot Motel and Cabins in White Sulphur Springs in 2007? It was a great time with a ton of wonderful memories. Well, we're going back. The 2015 Family Picnic will be held at the Tenderfoot on Sunday - August 23rd beginning at noon. There's a pool, a gazebo, and we'll have a room or two with kitchens and bathrooms. In order to use the gathering area and pool, I committed to paying for at least 2 rooms. I think we'll be staying that Saturday night. Contact me if you want to be part of the pre-party on Saturday night and I'll make the reservation for you. Rooms prices range from $60 -$90. It's going to be a great time and I encourage everyone to join in. Do me a favor and RSVP as soon as you can by commenting to this post. Also, in your comment, recall a memory you have from a past Family Picnic. Once I know who's going to attend, we'll figure out who can bring what. Love you all, and I look forward to seeing everyone in August. Tom Oh, and one of my Family Picnic memories is way back at the beginning when we ferried people to the sand dunes on the Missouri River. The numbers were a lot smaller back then, but we had a great time skiing and swimming.

I will definitely be there and count me in for a room.
My favorite family picnic memory was at Giant Springs when Dad barrowed a VHS video camera from a friend. Back then that was pretty high tech and I remember dad struggling to figure it out. Couple that with a typical Great Falls windy day and dad was getting a little frustrated. He eventually started to roll film and captured some great moments. That was the same picnic where we all went to a photo studio and got a family picture taken. Everyone was following the photographers direction except for Hannah who hated to have her picture taken and was throwing a fit. The end product caught her between cries. I think that was dad's last family picnic. I will look through my tapes as well as moms and see if I can find the "picnic tape" and make some DVD copies.

Connie and Bill will be there on Sunday. I can remember how this whole thing started. Bill had bought a small TV for the bedroom and said he would recycle the aluminum cans to pay for it. Then he decided that we should use the recycling money for a family picnic. The first few were the river ones that Tom recalled. I can also remember the picnic that Jim was talking about and I think it was the last one that we had dad with us. Of course as this great family grew, so did the family picnic. If everyone showed up there would be more than 60 people there.

Ann and I will be there. We won't need a room, as we're staying at the Moore Ranch leading up to the picnic on Sunday. I think my favorite memory was a later picnic at Giant Springs. Abe brought a video camera, which Bridger operated for a while. Then Abe interviewed all the grandchildren and asked them what they loved about Grandma. He compiled those interviews with background music by Joey and Abe. It was quite touching.

Marc and I will be there! The picnic Tom refers to is one of my favorites. That was in Marc's stalking days and he swam across the river to join us. He wasn't really invited, so he had to get himself there. Then we tried to teach him to ski and as I type this I am laughing hysterically at how that looked!! This will be a grand gathering. I know that Jen will be with us, so she will be coming!

Apparently my mom speaks for me now!!! Yes, I will be in town and I will definitely be attending---this is something I look forward to every year and I am always bummed when I cannot attend! As far as a memory---there are so many great ones, but I remember when we had it at your cabin on the lake, Tom, and there were people sleeping everywhere---I am pretty sure I slept out on the dock or the boat and woke up covered in dew. I think that also was where there was a rope swing and I definitely remember Ann flying through the air like a trapeze artist!

Jim and I and Maddie will be there for sure on Sunday. We won't need a room Saturday. Maddie plays volleyball in Sunburst all day Sat. I let my kids know about this so I will pass on RSVPs as i get them~
My favorite family picnic memory...I have so many. I remember the ones up at Jumping Creek with all the babies. And all the picnics where we were attacked by bees! But my favorites were the two already mentioned: Dad's last picnic and the family pictures afterward, and the video Abe made. Just such an awesome family!!
Can't wait to see y'all!

Yes I do, Jen, yes I do!! :):):)

Joey, Henry, Mike and I plan on heading there Sunday morning and then leaving a little early to get Mike back to Billings for his plane ride home.

My family picnic experiences are extremely limited, so I will say my favorite memory is beating Tommy and Johnny in a game of cribbage. Don't try to pretend it didn't happen, boys!

Diz and I will be there, with Johnny and Poppy. We'll drive in from Missoula in the a.m. and probably back in the p.m., so don't think we'll need a room. One of my favorite family picnic memories was also the Giant Springs one that we videotaped. It was really nice to have Uncle Buck there.

We are still trying to figure out if we can swing it. I remember looking forward to family picnics my whole life. All the sweet traditions and hanging out with such an incredible family! I also remember hating having my picture taken, it was authentically miserable for me. Funny that I love taking pictures so much now. But here is my belated apology for causing such a ruckus that day. :)

Kelly and I will be there with our herd. We won't be needing a room as we will be arriving in the morning with Joey and Erin and will be departing for Helena that night.

My favorite family picnic memory is from Whitefish Lake and the Baypoint condos. Jimmy would bring his boat up and teach all of us to ski. Mostly we had kids flying around on the many variations of tube toys that Jimmy had. But the moment that sticks out was when Abe and Jimmy had the idea of kneeboarding on either side of the tube that I was on. I swallowed a lot of water on that run, at least until Abe decided to join me on the tube.

As Erin said, I will be there for awhile Sunday before flying back to Seattle. Looking forward to seeing everyone that can make it. While I've enjoyed all the picnics throughout the years, one that sticks out to me was the last time at White Sulphur. It was great to meet the other Moores and tour the ranch and hear the stories from the elders. So much amazing history in this family. It was also very entertaining to see Dinger in auctioneer mode.

I am so bummed that Shane and I won't be making it. I will be coming in to Helena later that week. I have so many great memories from all of our family picnics. One of my favorites was definitely up at Tom and Jeanine's cabin. I tried sleeping in a recliner and it didn't pan out too well, but I got to water ski and I remember holding on with one hand trying to impress the people in the boat. I felt pretty awesome when I looked in the boat and saw Jimmy cheering me on. Such a wonderful family we have! Love you all!

Love,
Molly

I'm going to add another fond reflection which will help boost Tom's comment numbers and remind us all of "BLACK SUNDAY"!
It all started out innocently enough on a beautiful Sunday at Canyon Ferry, somewhere between 1996 and 1999 (John & Ann had some friends with them so maybe they could recall the year). I had my boat and was having a great time towing various nieces and nephews on skis and tubes. I can't remember which of them I was pulling at the time (had to have been a Buyske) but all of a sudden the steering on the boat went out. I remember Abe manhandling the motor to steer as we limped back to shore.
So even though we no longer had the boat, it was still a beautiful day and fun was obtained by various other activites, that was had up until the time a rouge storm blew in an reeked havic on our picnic and my boat which was helplessly banging up against the dock. I rushed to back the trailer into the water to retrieve the wounded and vulnerable vessel. Once safely on shore the storm passed and the festivities continued.
The picnic was coming to a close and we all said our goodbyes. I was one of the last to leave and I remember driving down the narrow highway between Canyon Ferry and Helena when I noticed the trailer began to fiercely vibrate. I looked into both mirrors and discovered a flat tire. I slowed and pondered where to safely pull over as there was no shoulder to the road, only a ditch. I steered as close as safely possible, stopped, and got out of the truck to survey the damage. About the time I was telling myself someone is going to run into either my boat and/or myself, I heard a whistle coming from the distance. I look over and notice a house a few hundred yards with a gentleman motioning over to his driveway. I hopped back into my truck and gingerly drive over to where he was indicating.
It was like a pit stop at the Daytona 500. Before I was even able to get out of my truck he rushes over with a floor jack and starts raising the trailer. He grabs his star wrench and swiftly removes the lug nuts. By that time I feel obligated to do my part having the spare tire at the ready. He grabs it and promptly mounts it onto the axle. He drops the jack and says, "hope you don't have another flat". I say thanks, offer him money, he says no, I continue on my journey.
I arrive in Helena and get gas. By this time it is starting to get dark and I realize I forgot my glasses. I figure I can squint through it and motor on.
Not to far out of Helena I run into a freak bug storm and my windshield becomes plastered with miniture flying roadkill. It becomes painfully apparent I was going to have to squint a little bit harder.
I was a few miles west of Deerborn and slightly accustomed to my limited field of vision when all of a sudden a deer bounds over the concrete divider. My natural instinct is to slam on the brakes but quickly realize by doing so could very well jackknife the boat and trailer. I veer in the opposing direction of the deer and am precariously close of being collision free when all of a sudden the deer stops. Ah hell! I slam on the brakes (thank God the trailer stayed true). The deer lunged but not in time before my right front bumper clipped it's rear quarter sending it into a fierce spiral which caused it to slam into the passenger door and sending it off into it's assumed demise.
Wondering what else could possibly go wrong, I pull over to survey the damage. With no vital fluids leaking and the fan blade spinning freely I continue on.
I arrive in Great Falls and stop by moms to share what has happened and hopefully obtain some much needed sympathy. While she did say she was sorry for my misfortunes, she pointed out the fact that I was physically okay and tomorrow will be a better day.
The boat and tire got fixed, the truck stayed the same but ran great and Monday was a better day.

First - the kids and I will be at the picnic on Sunday but alas it's football season so I'm not sure of Ryan's schedule.

Second - Jimmy - that is an INSANE story. I remember that picnic vaguely but never heard of your perils going home. And Grandma stayed true to self didn't she - you're fine, buck up, move on. LOL!

Third - A picnic I remember was outside of Lincoln at a random camp ground. Matt had finished one of his summer tours in Hawaii and we were teasing him about his birthday celebration (might have been his 21st?), there was a small creek, I believe a huge sub sandwich, and I THINK Jerry Philpot was there. Is that all right?
I also remember the reunion as I was a last-minute addition so the t-shirt I got was for a "Katie Buyske" ;) plus Ryan and I had just gotten hitched but he was down in Oklahoma and I had to call him mid-auction to see if I could spend more than $50 because that had been our agreement whilst long-distance (the newlyweds on a budget thank Jim for your patience) plus it was shortly after my Bells Palsy so I was still sporting an eye patch I believe. Man alive.
We've had some GOOD times!!

Peter, Sabina, Sailor and I will be there! Like Abe and crew we will be coming from Missoula in the morning and heading back the same day - so we won't be needing a room, but are super excited to be joining everyone!

I always loved the family picnics with a boat (thanks Jim!) I was never that good at skiing, but loved to try and loved to watch everyone playing in the water. One of my favorite times was Sabina's first family picnic (2008) - it was just so fun to see her play with her cousins and her other "cousins" and I love that they all get to grow up together.

I'm pretty sure the Meunier family will be there. The kids start school Monday the 24th which is definitely a drag. Not sure yet if we plan to stay the night on Saturday. It will depend on how quickly I get back to school shopping done!

Favorite family picnic memory: I was pretty young and don't really remember much about it, but there was a picnic at Giant Springs a long time ago. I know I was pretty little, but I distinctly remember even way back then thinking what a cool family we have as we drove away. We also had a pretty epic Capture the Flag game one year, but not sure when or where that was. Jumping Creek maybe? Anyway, always great to see everyone!

I remember Jim's Black Sunday well. It was 1996, and our visiting friends were from Slovenia. When the steering gear went out, Bostjan valiantly tried to diagnose the problem, but no luck.

Thanks, Jim, for the eloquent and extensive recollection of your day. You may have shouldered more expense that day than the rest of us combined for all family picnics.

As Erin said, we will be attending. I'm looking forward to meeting Poppy and seeing Little Johnny again (and you too bigger Johnny). Also looking forward to Henry meeting this great family of ours. I have such a terrible memory that most of my family picnic memories are from more recent ones. I do remember the kneeboarding show with Jimmy, Abe, and Matt at Whitefish lake, which was awesome. I remember a few at Giant Springs and one at Ryan's Dam where Dad was sleeping off to the side in a chair, as he's apt to do. The reunion was fun, but I didn't really get to stay for long so I missed out on a lot of stuff. The picnic that I remember most that was really fun for me was when we all stayed at that place by Bozeman and played games all day and guitars all night. It was fun to play with Abe, Johnny, and Abe's friend Sunil and just hang out with everybody. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in August, albeit shortly, and adding more memories to the family picnic vault.

Birch and I will be there on Sunday and are anxious to get to see all of you! I agree with Joey that the Bozeman picnic was probably my favorite. I loved that we had an entire weekend to spend as a family instead of just a couple of hours. The campfire sing alongs were awesome, as well as all of the games. I also think it was Birch's first family picnic besides the one after Megan's wedding.

A few other memories include the Buyske boys swinging us younger cousins over the camp site fire pit by our hands and feet at Jumping Creek. (Dad swears I threw a huge tantrum there, but I think he must be mistaking me for Nate.) I remember jumping off the diving board in Fort Benton after freaking out about it all afternoon. Holter Lake was a great time, and I remember the sound of all the bugs hitting the windshield while driving home. Can't wait to see all of you!

Nateusmoore said...

I will not be attending unfortunately as this summer has been jam packed with travel already. I hate missing the picnics and it's probably one of the worst parts about living away from Montana.

So many great family picnic memories but I have to say the last one at Holter brings back fond memories. Some of the cousins got up their early and capped a couple nights and we enjoyed mountain goat sausage and random conversation about NASA. My breakfasts consisted of red hot links and Coors Originals. When the picnic officially started my body only wanted water but the beersbi poles were out and I found the strength to continue on.

Miss you all and wish I could be in WSS next month. Love, Nate

I remember wrestling the motor while you handled the throttle. And we thought that would be the low point of the day!

While not technically a picnic story, that camping trip was a real highlight. It started with a full campground, an illegal tent pitch, and some friendly negotiation with a ranger. It ended with Ben and I swimming across Park Lake and Ben walking back. In between we had some great philosophical discussions around the campfire. Good times.

Nateusmoore said...

I totally forgot about the swim and the illegal camping. I figure that any event surrounding a picnic counts as a picnic memory and those were some great memories.

It is hard to come up with one favorite picnic memory. There have been so many fun times in so many fun places! I have especially liked the after parties with all the great musicians in the family.
